Rocky Point Fishing Weekend: Where to Stay and How to Plan It
Last reviewed
Rocky Point is the closest saltwater fishing to Arizona. You can leave Phoenix or Tucson on Friday morning, be on the water Saturday, and have fillets in the freezer before the drive home Sunday. The fishing is the easy part. The planning is where most weekends go sideways: too many hotel rooms, a boat booked for the wrong tide, and nowhere to park the truck.
This guide covers how to plan a Rocky Point fishing weekend that actually works, with a focus on where to stay. For the full fishing playbook (charters, species, licenses, and tides), visit our sister site, Rocky Point Fishing Lodge.
Why Rocky Point Works for a Fishing Weekend
- Short drive. Puerto Peñasco is about 4 hours from Phoenix and Tucson, and about 1 hour 15 minutes from the Lukeville border crossing.
- Real fishing close to shore. Reefs 4 to 15 miles out hold corvina, cabrilla, grouper, and triggerfish, so a half-day trip is worth taking.
- Big tides. The northern Sea of Cortez has some of the largest tides in North America, which shapes when the bite turns on and when boats can launch.
- Easy group trip. One house, one boat, and one weekend fits a father and son, three generations, or a crew of buddies.
The Best Time for a Rocky Point Fishing Weekend
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. The water and air are comfortable, and the wind is usually manageable. Summer brings hot afternoons, so book an early half day and spend the afternoon on the rooftop. Winter can be excellent for some species, but cold fronts bring wind that cancels charters, so plan a backup day.
Two things matter more than the month:
- Wind. Captains cancel when the wind makes the trip unsafe. Watch the forecast the week before, and keep Sunday morning open as a backup.
- Tides. Many anglers prefer the incoming tide, and ramp access depends on tide height. Check our Puerto Peñasco tide chart before you lock in a day.
For a season-by-season look at what bites when, see the Rocky Point Fishing Lodge species guides.
Where to Stay for a Fishing Weekend in Rocky Point
Most groups default to hotel rooms near Sandy Beach or the Malecón. That works for two people. For a fishing crew, it falls apart fast: you pay for several rooms, nobody has a kitchen or freezer, and parking a boat trailer is a fight.
A fishing group needs four things from a place to stay:
- Parking for trucks and trailers. You are hauling coolers, and maybe a boat.
- A freezer. Your catch needs somewhere to go between the dock and the drive home.
- A kitchen. Fresh fish tacos the night you catch them are half the point of the trip.
- One roof for the whole crew. The stories are better when everyone is on the same rooftop at sunset.

- Freezer for the catch and a fully equipped kitchen for cooking it
- About 100 feet from the water, with JJ's Cantina across the street
- Rooftop patio with ocean and desert views
- A/C in every room and Starlink Wi-Fi

How to Book a Charter for Your Weekend
You have three ways to fish Rocky Point by boat:
| Charter type | Typical time | Where you fish | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Afternoon trip | About 3 hours | Reefs 4 to 10 miles out | Arrival day, first-timers, kids |
| Half day | About 6 hours | Reefs 10 to 15 miles out | A classic Saturday on the water |
| Full day | About 9 hours | 15 to 30 miles out, bigger grouper and snapper | Serious anglers, longer stays |
When you stay with us, we coordinate the boat through our partner captains at Rocky Point Fishing Lodge. We confirm availability, time the trip around the tide and the wind, and send you the captain's booking link. You pay the captain directly at the captain's own price, with nothing added.
On our partner charters, the captain provides rods, reels, tackle, bait, fishing licenses, and fish cleaning at the dock. Your crew brings drinks and coolers.
What a Rocky Point Fishing Weekend Costs
Here is a sample weekend for a crew of 6: two nights at Cholla Bay Vista (Friday and Saturday) plus a Saturday half-day charter.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Lodging, 2 weekend nights at $175 | $350 |
| Cleaning fee | $90 |
| Half-day charter (whole boat, paid to the captain) | About $600 |
| Total before lodging taxes and tips | About $1,040 |
| Per angler with 6 | About $173 |
Compare that with hotel rooms. Three rooms for 6 guys at about $175 per room per night runs about $1,050 for the weekend before you even book a boat. Charter prices change, so treat these as October 2026 estimates and confirm the current rate when you book. Food, drinks, and crew tips are extra. For how much to tip, see the Rocky Point Fishing Lodge tipping guide.
Staying during the week saves more. Sunday through Thursday nights are $125.
A Simple Weekend Plan
Friday: Cross at Lukeville, grab groceries and ice in town, check in at 3 p.m., and watch the sunset from the rooftop. If you arrive early, an afternoon trip gets lines wet on day one.
Saturday: Meet the boat in the morning. The captain cleans your catch at the dock. Back at the house, the fish goes in the freezer, and dinner is whatever you caught.
Sunday: Pack the coolers, check out by 11 a.m., and head for the border. If Saturday was blown out by wind, Sunday morning is your backup day on the water.
Before You Go
- Passport: Every adult needs a passport, passport card, or other approved document to return to the U.S. by land. See Do You Need a Passport for Rocky Point?
- Mexican car insurance: Your U.S. policy does not cover you in Mexico. See our Mexican car insurance guide.
- The border: Check Lukeville hours and wait times before you leave. See our Lukeville border crossing guide.
- Safety: Read the current travel advisory and our Rocky Point safety guide.
- Fishing license: Mexico requires a recreational fishing license. On our partner charters, the captain handles it at the dock. For shore fishing or your own boat, read the Mexican fishing license guide on Rocky Point Fishing Lodge.
- Bringing fish home: Declare all fish at the U.S. border. Pack fillets flat in ice-filled coolers. The Rocky Point Fishing Lodge guide to bringing fish home covers the details.
